Saskatchewan Youth from Care Bursary

Value: The value of the award is comprised of the following:
  • total tuition and fees for the fall and winter terms
  • cost of living needs based on the amount designated by current Saskatchewan Student Aid as the allowable living costs of a ‘single student living away from home’,
  • cost of books and supplies for a student’s enrolled program based on the yearly program information from the USask Registrar’s office,
  • an additional $1,000 in the first year of the award as support for initial expenses related to beginning a post-secondary program.

Eligibility: Open to entering or continuing students in any direct-entry degree program at the University of Saskatchewan who were or are “youth in care”* under the Child and Family Services Act of the Saskatchewan Ministry of Social Services or a First Nations Child and Family Services Agency (FNCFSA).

To be eligible, candidates must:
  • have received or be currently receiving “youth in care”* services from
    • Child and Family Programs of the Saskatchewan Ministry of Social Services, OR
    • FNCFSA
    • For at least 12 months between the ages of 13 and 21.
  • have begun post-secondary education within 10 years of receiving services or exiting care, or began post-secondary (at any institution) within 10 years of receiving services or exiting care and are transferring to the University of Saskatchewan;
  • be accepted into or continuing studies in a direct-entry college at the University of Saskatchewan for a first undergraduate degree;
  • for entering students, if available in the college of admission, enter a learning community for the first year of study;
  • have begun post-secondary education within 10 years of receiving services or exiting care, or began post-secondary (at any institution) within 10 years of receiving services or exiting care and are transferring to the University of Saskatchewan; and
  • sign and submit a release of information authorizing the university to confirm eligibility based on the Ministry of Social Services or FNCFSA records in Saskatchewan;
  • register in and complete at least 18 credit units of courses over the fall and winter terms combined.


  • *"Youth in care" services from Child and Family Programs or a First Nations Child and Family Services Agency means:
    • in temporary care by means of court order or Agreement (Section 9);
    • in long-term or permanent care of the Minister;
    • receiving Support Services to 16 and 17 Year Olds (Section 10); or
    • receiving an Extension of Support Services (Section 56).
    Selection criteria: Academic achievement

    Preference may be given to self-declared Aboriginal students.
