Matthew Baraniuk Memorial Award
| Value: | $2,000 |
|---|---|
| Number offered: | 1 |
| Eligibility: | Open to entering students who are pursuing degree studies in any direct entry program at the University of Saskatchewan. To be eligible, applicants must provide a statement of no more than one page, which outlines the challenges and obstacles they have worked to overcome/ navigate as a student while living with mental health challenges. The award is named in memory of Matthew Baraniuk, a former University of Saskatchewan's Huskies football player and student, who died May 2020. Matthew Baraniuk was extremely dedicated and passionate towards those he cared deeply for. He was a gifted athlete and displayed strong, silent leadership in numerous ways in all his many sports teams. Matthew silently struggled with anxiety and depression. Unfortunately, there were far too few supports available to Matthew in these times and he lost his battle on May 20, 2020. While USask offers a number of accommodations and mental health supports to students, entering students aren’t always aware of the programs available. The donor hopes this award helps not only the recipient but others to find the right level of support for their post-secondary journey. |
| Selection criteria: | Based on the relative merits of the submitted statements, as determined by the Award Committee. Upon acceptance of the award, the recipient will receive information pertaining to health and wellness programs and support services available to them on campus. |
