Jones/La Borde Memorial Student Award

Value: $20,000 ($5,000 a year for up to four years)

Eligibility: Open to full time students entering the Bachelor of Education in the College of Education for the first time at the University of Saskatchewan. To be eligible, entering applicants must have a minimum 80% average and demonstrate financial need.

Renewable for up to three additional years with the completion of at least 24 credit units (or 18, if registered as having a permanent disability with Access and Equity Services) the prior fall and winter terms and have maintained a minimum of 75% on all credit units attempted during the prior fall and winter terms.
Selection criteria: Based upon financial need and academic excellence.
Donor: This award is named in memory of Laura Jones (Cluff) and Ellen La Borde (Hambly), who grew up during the depression and both attended Normal School and began their teaching careers in rural Saskatchewan.

As her children became older, Laura completed her Bachelor of Education at the University of Saskatchewan and went on to obtain a Library Science degree at the University of Toronto. She worked for many years at the Saskatoon Public Library.

Ellen, when her husband unexpectantly passed away, returned to teaching to support the family. She taught Grade 4 at Queen Elizabeth School in Saskatoon for many years.

This award is supported by George and Patricia La Borde in memory of their mothers, strong Saskatchewan women who valued education and lifelong learning.
