James Pon Memorial Award

Eligibility: Entrants for this scholarship must be enrolled in a post secondary education program (college or university) in Canada for September 2014.

Please submit an essay (1000-1500 words) about the history of Chinese people in Canada and their contributions to the construction of the railroad and to this country.

Essays will be judged by a committee selected by the FCCRWC Board of Directors. Judges will be looking for:
  • Historical accuracy
  • Demonstrated understanding of the contribution of the Chinese community to the construction of the railroad in Canada;
  • Demonstrated understanding of the historical treatment of the Chinese community by the Canadian community and Canadian government; and
  • Thoughts on why this history is important to remember.

By entering this contest entrants agree to having their essay posted on our website or other online or print media for the purpose of historical education. Winners will be announced at our annual wreath laying ceremony at the Chinese Railroad Workers Memorial in Toronto on Canada Day. The first place winning essay will be read at this event.
