What you will learn
Students will complete core nutrition courses that cover the fundamentals of human nutrition. The Certificate in Human Nutrition also allows students to choose courses of interest that range from science to community-based topics.
NUTR 120.3 Basic Nutrition
An introduction to nutrition and health. The concepts of recommended nutrient intakes and dietary guidelines are introduced. The major nutrients and their functions in the body are outlined. Nutrition issues facing the general public are presented.
NUTR 200.3 Introduction to Nutrition in Fitness, Sport and Health
This course provides a comprehensive overview of the introductory principles and practices of nutrition for physical activity across a variety of demographics. Students will explore the relationships between nutrition and physical activity, fitness, and sport in supporting health longevity in healthy populations throughout the lifecycle and those living with chronic conditions (e.g., diabetes, cardiometabolic diseases). The course will focus on macro and micronutrient needs for fueling physical activity and also explore the interplay of diet and exercise in manipulation of body composition as well as the benefit (or lack thereof) of dietary components such as phytochemicals and dietary supplements. Through lectures and discussions, students will gain a deeper understanding of how nutrition can enhance fitness and athletic performance, as well as overall health.
NUTR 350.3 Community Nutrition
This course is an introduction to the field of community and public health nutrition and its role in health and healthcare. The process and theoretical foundations of nutrition and health promotion and the theories, research methods, and perspectives applicable to nutrition and health promotion are covered. The role of the community and public health nutritionist in determining, delivering and managing public health and community nutrition services is emphasized along with the tools, skills, and techniques necessary for developing effective services.

Recognizing Human Nutrition as an area of specialization through a certificate program allows students to pursue a quality education through a reputable College and Institution. This certificate provides options for online, off-campus learning. The certificate is available to current USask students, USask alumni and those who have never attended the University of Saskatchewan.

The Certificate in Human Nutrition is meant to complement any existing or current degree options as it provides students with a solid background in human health and nutrition, and allows students to choose courses of interest in food science and nutrition. This certificate may also be of interest to those who are working in nutrition-related jobs such as managers and employees in food service, those working in the food industry, health and wellness educators, as well as healthcare professionals such as nurses, kinesiologists, rehabilitation professionals, and others.
Upon completion of the certificate program, students may be interested in pursuing a degree in nutrition and dietetics (Bachelor of Science in Nutrition) or in food and nutrition (Bachelor of Science in Food and Nutrition).

This certificate is offered by the College of Pharmacy and Nutrition. You may earn the certificate on its own, concurrently with a degree program from this college or others, or after completing a degree.

Admission requirements
Regular Admission – post-secondary (18 credit units of transferable post-secondary)
- Admission is based on successful completion of secondary (high school) level standing with a minimum overall average of 70% in required subjects;
- Or admission is based on the successful completion of at least 18 credit units of transferable university-level coursework from a recognized and/or accredited post-secondary institution, with an average of at least 60%.
- Proficiency in English
Special Mature Admission (less than 18 credit units of transferable post-secondary)
- Proof of age (21 or older);
- Have not previously attended university or college;
- A written submission demonstrating capacity to undertake university-level studies;
- Have attempted or completed less than 18 credit units of transferable post-secondary coursework;
- Do not meet the standards for regular admission;
- Proficiency in English
