About
Currently, students with an interest in nutrition who are not enrolled in the Bachelor of Science in Nutrition program do not have many options for receiving academic credit for taking a suite of human nutrition science courses outside of the Minor in Nutrition, or those students enrolled in the Food and Nutrition program through the College of Agriculture and Bioresources. The Certificate in Human Nutrition provides non-B.Sc.(Nutr.) students who complete a set of core courses in nutrition with a formal acknowledgement of their accomplishment.
- Two-year certificate
- Part-time program
- Offered only at the main USask campus in Saskatoon with exception of one class offered flexibly at P.A. campus, regional colleges, and/or online
What you will learn
Students will complete core nutrition courses that cover the fundamentals of human nutrition. The Certificate in Human Nutrition also allows students to choose courses of interest that range from science to community-based topics.
NUTR 210.3 Food Fundamentals and Preparation
An introduction to the science of food and its application for home consumption. Topics include food chemistry, food preparation techniques, and factors affecting food consumption.
NUTR 200.3 Introduction to Nutrition in Fitness, Sport and Health
This course provides a comprehensive overview of the introductory principles and practices of nutrition for physical activity across a variety of demographics. Students will explore the relationships between nutrition and physical activity, fitness, and sport in supporting health longevity in healthy populations throughout the lifecycle and those living with chronic conditions (e.g., diabetes, cardiometabolic diseases). The course will focus on macro and micronutrient needs for fueling physical activity and also explore the interplay of diet and exercise in manipulation of body composition as well as the benefit (or lack thereof) of dietary components such as phytochemicals and dietary supplements. Through lectures and discussions, students will gain a deeper understanding of how nutrition can enhance fitness and athletic performance, as well as overall health.
NUTR 350.3 Community Nutrition
This course is an introduction to the field of community and public health nutrition and its role in health and healthcare. The process and theoretical foundations of nutrition and health promotion and the theories, research methods, and perspectives applicable to nutrition and health promotion are covered. The role of the community and public health nutritionist in determining, delivering and managing public health and community nutrition services is emphasized along with the tools, skills, and techniques necessary for developing effective services.
